I spent a slow afternoon exploring Latur’s markets and temples

Most people think that Latur is a city they should pass through rather than one they should spend time exploring. That was my plan, too. I thought that I’d arrive, make a few stops, have lunch, and then move on. Instead, I became aware of my slowing down.

We spent hours touring bustling marketplaces, visiting peaceful shrines, having conversations with vendors, and discovering that Latur has a subtle charm that is easy to overlook if you’re always looking for the next adventure.

There weren’t many well-known landmarks there. They did not seem necessary. With one street at a time, it was a place that could sometimes just grow on you.

Latur’s markets were full of everyday life

I started my afternoon at one of Latur’s bustling market areas, anticipating a quick walk. However, that was not the case. The sidewalks were lined with stores offering everything from colourful textiles and traditional Maharashtrian clothing to housewares, fresh food, spices, and handcrafted delicacies. The place has a laid-back environment. Shopkeepers welcomed customers, calling them by name, vendors carefully set up their displays, and families walked leisurely through the lanes. It felt less like a tourist attraction and more like a glimpse into the city’s everyday life.

Every lane in Latur had something worth stopping for

The fact that the markets were more than just places to shop was evident. A small sweet shop tempted me with freshly made pedhas. The smell of crispy potato fries and hot vada pav wafted from a local stall a short distance away. Moving forward, I saw shops selling handcrafted goods, brass utensils, and shelves filled with regional spices. I hardly ever knew where I was going. I just continued to follow whatever drew my interest. Sometimes that’s the best way to explore a city.

Latur’s temples offered a welcome pause

After the hustle and bustle of the marketplaces, the pace of the afternoon radically changed as I entered Latur’s temples. The calm surroundings, the sound of bells, and the gentle cadence of devotees offering prayers created a peaceful environment that was significantly removed from the busy streets outside.

I visited a few lesser-known local temples that weren’t listed in many travel publications after spending some time at the historic Ashtavinayak Temple, one of the city’s most well-known temples. It all demonstrated that sometimes the best impressions are made in those more subdued settings.

The local food of Latur became part of the walk 

A trip to an Indian market isn’t complete without a meal. In Latur, I found myself taking frequent breaks rather than sitting somewhere for long and having a proper meal. There were crunchy bhel, freshly made poha, spicy misal pav, sugarcane juice to cool off in the afternoon, and cups of hot tea that made me want to stay a bit longer. It was not complicated at all yet was all gratifying. The food matched the city’s straightforward, welcoming personality.

Staying in Latur’s city centre made exploring easy

Looking back, I was glad I had booked one of the hotels in Latur close to the city centre. It made it easier for me to review the markets, visit nearby temples without having to make travel arrangements, and return to the hotel to rest before departing once more in the evening. Choosing a central location is essential when one wishes to choose a destination best experienced at a leisurely pace. 

Latur rewards curious travellers

Latur doesn’t overwhelm you with popular tourist attractions or well-known sites. Rather, it encourages curiosity. I explored a local market instead of visiting a mall. I spent a little extra time inside a neighbourhood temple. I also stopped for another cup of tea. I even had a conversation with a local vendor packing my snacks. The city grew friendlier the more time I spent there.

Final thoughts

When I came to Latur, I was expecting it would be just a brief stop during a longer journey. I was relieved that I hadn’t hurried through it when I left. I discovered a side of Maharashtra after spending an afternoon exploring bustling marketplaces, experiencing the hospitality of hotels in Latur, touring calm temples, trying regional street cuisine, and just taking in the city’s everyday rhythm.

Popular attractions are not necessary for every destination to be memorable. Sometimes, all it takes is a quiet afternoon, comfortable walking shoes, and the courage to let a city unveil itself at its own speed.
